Why should you have a specific pump for filtration?

Firstly the aim of filtration is to remove the waste from the pond. Fountain pumps have specifically designed Pre-Filters to prevent waste from being passed through the pump. Therefore, a good pump to run a filter, should be of a design which pumps solid waste through to the filter. Secondly, the inclusion of filtration will mean the edition or extension of the supply hose, which will increase back pressure on the pump. Therefore a filter pump needs to be powerful enough to work against these pressures, and still produce the correct flowrate.
All of the pumps listed below are designed to meet these requirements. However, even these pumps can have their flows affected by filtration systems. We would recommend that hose runs are kept as short and straight as possible and that the hose is of the largest diameter that the equipment will take. Should your hose run exceed 5m (16.4ft) then please contact us and we will be happy to double-check your pump sizing.
When selecting your pump you should measure the lift (height from water level to the inlet to the filter) and then add 0.3m(1ft) for an Ultra Violet and 0.3m(1ft) for filter resistance.
