Which Liner and Underlay should you choose.
Whether your pond is a natural pond, home to a few Goldfish or has giant Koi it has to hold water, and in most ponds the water is kept in with a liner. The process of building a pond is not something too many people would cherish having to do twice. It is therefore important that the correct liner, and if need be underlay is chosen. If not then the pond will not be water tight and the whole project may need re-doing. You cannot predict every eventuality, but spending some time working out the risk and threats can save time and money later. The risks to liners come from above and below. From above they are predominantly from claws and accidents. The claws could be dogs, cats, ducks and herons. From below the risks are from stones, flint, rubble, underground pipe work and roots (existing and new systems). This is not a full list, but some of the most common problems we have come across. If you believe any of these maybe a problem then we would recommend using the stronger liners and underlay i.e.Aquapem EPDM, Butyl, Greenseal or Firestone liners each with 260g underlay. However, if you do not believe the liner is under any threat then a budget option may be the AquaPrem 15 or 30 PVC liners, with 180g underlay as an added precaution.

Butyl pond liner is made from 0.75mm rubber. Butyl is very flexible which is why it was the favored material when lining ponds were a lot of folds are expected. Unfortunately recent price rises have now mad Butyl a more expensive option. Whilst it is not guaranteed against puncture, the flexibility of Butyl liner helps to guard against puncture. Greenseal EPDM pond liners are the modern alternative to Butyl ponds liners, 0.75mm Aquaprem EPDM pond liners comes with a Lifetime Guarantee. Greenseal EPDM pond liners have the same if not better UV stability, weather tolerance and strength properties than Butyl, but at a lower price.

Firestone EDPM Pond Liner is 1mm thick rubber pond liner . Firestone EPDM rubber pond liners have almost exactly the same properties as 0.75mm Butyl pond liner, but has even better weathering capabilities and because this is 0.25mm thicker than the Butyl pond liner you will end up with a stronger product for less. Our 260gm/m² underlay is a top quality densely woven fibre which is root resistant and puncture resistant. It has a weight and density of 260gm/m². This underlay is so strong and dense that we even have problems cutting it in house and as such we are happy to recommend this underlay as a very effective protection for your liner. Lifetime Guarantee
The lifetime guarantee covers all of these pond liners produced by Gordon Low Products Ltd, up to 140 m2 (1500 ft2). The pond liner must be used for a domestic garden pond only and it must be installed according to the instructions provided. In the event of failure due to faulty seams, materials or manufacture the company offers at its discretion to repair or replace the product without charge. The company shall not be liable for any consequential loss or costs of removal, installation or carriage costs. The guarantee does not cover contact with chemicals, excessive stretching, misuse, puncturing or mechanical damage of any kind.
