Aquateck Bio Balls Filter Media Description
Bio balls are primarily intended for the biological stage of pond filtration. Once the filter has matured, naturally occurring nitrifying bacteria colonise the media and help convert ammonia into nitrite and then into the less harmful nitrate form.
The media should be positioned where it receives a continuous flow of oxygenated pond water. It is normally used after suitable mechanical filtration, helping to reduce the amount of solid waste collecting around the bio balls and restricting water movement.
Although the media may catch some debris, its main purpose is biological filtration rather than the removal of fine suspended particles.
A newly installed or thoroughly cleaned biological filter will need time to mature because an effective bacterial population is not established immediately. Filter development can vary depending on fish load, feeding levels, temperature, oxygen, pH and general water conditions.
Good to Know
- Check that the size and design of the bio balls are suitable for the intended filter chamber before ordering.
- Install the media where pond water can flow freely through and around it.
- Use suitable mechanical filtration before the biological chamber wherever the filter design allows.
- When established media needs cleaning, rinse it gently in removed pond water rather than tap water.
- Do not use detergents or thoroughly clean all biological media at the same time, as this can reduce the established bacterial population.
