The Blagdon Affinity Ice Vent Pond Heater is a floating 50 watt pond heater suitable for ponds up to 5000 litres and once installed will help keep an area of pond surface free from ice (down to -10°C). The unique low wattage, convection design means the heater only requires minimal energy. The sleeve surrounding the heater element helps create a flow of water past the element increasing its effectiveness, whilst protecting anything in the pond from coming into contact with the hot surface.
Although fish become inactive (torpor) when the pond water temperature drops low enough, they still breath and so still need oxygen and produce carbon dioxide. If the pond freezes over it stops gas exchange meaning no oxygen will get into the pond and the harmful gases are trapped, because of this it is vital to keep an area of the pond free from ice. You shouldn't smash ice or poor boiling water on to melt it; both of these can cause health issues for your fish.
