Evolution Aqua Surge and Pondomax 5000 Control Kit

The Evolution Aqua Surge Filter + UV and Pontec PondoMax Eco 5000 Control Pump package combines a compact mechanical and biological pond filter with an 18W UVC and an electronically adjustable filter pump. It has been specifically paired to provide a controllable water flow that can be matched to the requirements of the Surge Filter, rather than using an unnecessarily large unmatched pump.

The Evolution Aqua Surge Filter + UV is designed for goldfish and koi ponds up to 5,000 litres and has a maximum recommended flow rate of 3,500 litres per hour, with an optimum flow rate of 2,500 litres per hour. The included Pontec PondoMax Eco 5000 Control has a maximum output of 5,000 litres per hour, but importantly for this package, its electronic controller provides 7-stage flow adjustment. This allows the pump output to be reduced to suit the filter and the individual installation.

Why We Have Selected This Pump

Some pond filter packages are supplied with pumps capable of considerably higher flow rates than the filter itself is designed to handle. With the Surge Filter, simply fitting a much larger pump does not improve filtration; the water still needs to pass through the filter at an appropriate rate.

The PondoMax Eco 5000 Control gives you control over the pump output, allowing the system to be adjusted so that the flow through the Surge Filter remains within its maximum 3,500 litres per hour rating. The actual flow reaching the filter will also depend on factors such as hose diameter, hose length and the height through which the water is pumped.

Evolution Aqua Surge Filter + UV

Pond water enters the bottom of the Surge Filter and passes through its K+ filtration media. The media provides mechanical filtration by trapping waste particles while also providing surface area for beneficial bacteria involved in biological filtration. Water also passes the integrated 18W UVC, which causes suspended green water algae to clump together so that it can be captured more easily by the filter media. 

The Surge uses Evolution Aqua's air-assisted cleaning system. During cleaning, the pump is switched off and the filter valves are operated so that air entering the chamber agitates the K+ media and releases accumulated waste through the waste outlet. The unit must be installed vertically with the inlet at the bottom and outlet at the top. 

Pontec PondoMax Eco 5000 Control Pump

The PondoMax Eco 5000 Control is a solids-handling filter pump with an integrated electronic controller. The controller provides seven output settings and a four-digit display showing the selected output level, power consumption or an error code. The pump also incorporates protection against dry running and blockage.

Good to Know

The pump should be adjusted so that the actual water flow through the Surge Filter does not exceed 3,500 litres per hour. For best matching of the system, Evolution Aqua specifies an optimum filter flow of 2,500 litres per hour. Actual flow will be reduced by pipework, hose length, fittings and pumping height, so the appropriate controller setting will vary between installations.
