EPDM and Pond Liner Advice

EPDM and Pond Liner Advice Header

Choosing the right pond liner is one of the most important decisions when building or refurbishing a garden pond. A good liner needs to hold water reliably, cope with ground movement, resist weathering and remain safe for fish, wildlife and pond plants.

This guide explains the main types of pond liner available, including Greenseal EPDM, Firestone / Elevate PondGard EPDM, Butyl rubber pond liners and PVC pond liners. It also helps you compare thickness, flexibility, durability, installation, underlay use and suitability for koi ponds, wildlife ponds, water features and general garden ponds.

Our Recommendation: For most domestic garden ponds, we generally recommend a quality EPDM rubber pond liner used together with suitable pond liner underlay. Greenseal EPDM is often the best balance between flexibility, durability and value, while Firestone / Elevate PondGard EPDM is particularly suited to larger ponds, koi ponds, wildlife ponds, public areas and more demanding installations.

Quick Answer: Which Pond Liner Should I Choose?

For most quality garden ponds, an EPDM rubber pond liner is the best long-term choice. EPDM offers excellent flexibility, weather resistance and durability, making it suitable for a wide range of pond shapes and sizes. Greenseal EPDM is a strong all-round option, while Firestone / Elevate PondGard EPDM is a heavier 1mm liner often chosen for larger, higher-value or koi pond installations.

Butyl rubber pond liner remains a high-quality traditional liner material, particularly where flexibility is important, but it is usually more expensive than modern EPDM alternatives. PVC pond liner is normally a lower-cost option best suited to smaller ponds, temporary ponds or more budget-conscious projects.

Compare Pond Liner Materials

Pond Liner Type Typical Thickness Best For Main Benefit Things To Consider
Greenseal EPDM Pond Liner 0.75mm Most domestic garden ponds, fish ponds, wildlife ponds and water features. Excellent balance of flexibility, durability, ease of installation and value. Lighter and easier to fold into smaller ponds and shelves than thicker 1mm liners. Use with suitable pond liner underlay for best protection.
Firestone / Elevate PondGard EPDM Pond Liner 1.0mm Koi ponds, larger ponds, wildlife ponds, public areas and demanding installations. Extra thickness gives improved puncture resistance and long-term durability. Heavier and less flexible on tight folds and smaller pond shelves.
Butyl Rubber Pond Liner 0.75mm Traditional premium pond builds and complex shapes. Very flexible and well established pond liner material. Usually more expensive than modern EPDM liners with similar practical performance.
PVC Pond Liner Approx. 0.5mm Small ponds, temporary ponds and budget-conscious projects. Lower initial purchase cost. Less durable and less flexible long-term than EPDM or Butyl rubber liners.

What Is EPDM Pond Liner?

EPDM pond liner is a synthetic rubber liner used to create a waterproof barrier in ponds, streams, waterfalls and water features. It is popular because it remains flexible, copes well with outdoor conditions and is easier to shape into irregular pond designs than many stiffer materials.

EPDM is often chosen as the modern alternative to traditional Butyl rubber pond liner because it offers excellent performance at a more competitive price. It is particularly suitable for customers who want a long-lasting liner without paying the higher cost usually associated with Butyl.

Greenseal EPDM Pond Liner

Greenseal EPDM is a 0.75mm rubber pond liner and is a strong choice for most domestic garden ponds. It offers good flexibility, UV stability, weather tolerance and strength, making it suitable for wildlife ponds, fish ponds, ornamental ponds and general garden pond construction.

For many customers, Greenseal EPDM is the best balance between quality and value. It is a sensible choice when you want a durable rubber liner but do not necessarily need the extra thickness of a 1mm professional-grade EPDM liner.

Firestone / Elevate PondGard EPDM Pond Liner

Firestone PondGard, now commonly associated with Elevate PondGard, is a 1.0mm EPDM rubber pond liner. It is a heavier-duty option often chosen for koi ponds, larger ponds, waterfalls, streams and high-value installations where the extra liner thickness provides added confidence.

PondGard EPDM is designed for decorative ponds and professional installations. Its flexibility and elasticity allow it to cope with complex pond shapes, support movement and detailed installation work.

We often recommend 1mm PondGard EPDM in situations where there may be a greater risk of accidental puncture from above, such as public areas, wildlife ponds or ponds where children may use landing nets or pond dipping equipment. The additional thickness can also be beneficial in natural wildlife ponds where caddisfly larvae activity may be more common, as caddisfly larvae are a known pond liner damage concern recognised within the pond liner industry and by manufacturers.

However, for smaller ponds or highly detailed pond shapes, this needs to be balanced against the fact that thicker 1mm EPDM is naturally less flexible than lighter 0.75mm liners. On tighter folds and smaller shelves, heavier liners can sometimes be harder to position neatly and keep in place during installation.

Butyl Rubber Pond Liner

Butyl rubber pond liner is the traditional premium pond liner material. It is very flexible, which made it a long-standing favourite for complex pond shapes where folds and shaping are expected.

Butyl remains a high-quality liner choice, but repeated price increases have made it a more expensive option than modern EPDM liners. For many domestic pond projects, Greenseal EPDM or PondGard EPDM will offer a better balance of performance and price.

PVC Pond Liner

PVC pond liner is generally used as a more budget-conscious option. It can be suitable for smaller ponds, simpler pond shapes and customers who want a lower initial cost.

For larger ponds, koi ponds or long-term garden pond installations, EPDM pond liner or Butyl rubber pond liner is normally the better recommendation because of the improved flexibility and long-term confidence offered by rubber liners.

Do I Need Pond Liner Underlay?

In most pond builds, pond liner underlay is strongly recommended. Underlay helps protect the liner from stones, roots and rough ground beneath the pond. It can also be used above the liner where stonework, rocks or decorative features may rub against the liner surface.

Underlay is a small extra cost compared with the cost and disruption of replacing a damaged pond liner, so it should normally be treated as part of the pond build rather than an optional extra.

How To Calculate Pond Liner Size

To calculate pond liner size, you need the longest pond length, longest pond width and deepest pond depth. Always use the same measurement unit throughout, either metres or feet.

As a practical guide, allow enough liner to travel down one side of the pond, across the bottom and back up the other side, with extra overlap around the edge for securing and finishing.

Use our pond liner calculator if you would like help working out the correct liner size for your pond, or read our How To Measure For A Pond Liner guide for step-by-step measuring advice.

Installing and Looking After Your Pond Liner

Good installation has a major impact on liner performance. Ground preparation, correct underlay use, careful folding, enough edge overlap and sensible edging all help reduce the risk of punctures, creases, movement and leaks.

Common Pond Liner Questions

Is EPDM pond liner better than PVC?

For most long-term pond builds, EPDM is the better choice because it is a flexible rubber liner with excellent weather resistance and durability. PVC is usually chosen when budget is the main priority.

Is Greenseal EPDM suitable for fish ponds?

Yes, Greenseal EPDM is suitable for garden fish ponds when installed correctly with suitable underlay and edge finishing.

Is Firestone / Elevate PondGard suitable for koi ponds?

Yes, PondGard EPDM is a strong choice for koi ponds, larger ponds and more demanding pond installations.

Is Butyl still worth buying?

Butyl is still a high-quality pond liner material, but modern EPDM liners now offer excellent performance and are often better value for most domestic pond projects.

Should I use underlay with a pond liner?

Yes. Pond liner underlay is strongly recommended because it helps protect the liner from puncture risks caused by stones, roots and rough ground.
