I would recommend this heron scarer on the basis there seems to be nothing else on the market that is better, and I'm really keen to avoid netting my pond.
My experience is that the on / off switch is far too fiddly and inconveniently situated on the side of the housing. It is a 4 position (only one of which is off) rotary knob which is difficult to grip without moving the position of the sensor housing, particularly when wet. If, like me, you need to switch it off every time you want to visit your pond or feed your fish, you'll probably approach it from the back to avoid getting soaked, so it needs a simple on/off rocker switch on the rear of the housing. How easy would that be?
Also the sensor is very sensitive to the movement of foliage up to 10 metres away and I've had to rearrange plants to avoid regular false activations when it's windy.
The plastic seems a bit on the flimsy side to me, particularly where the components slot together. Time will tell how long it lasts. I don't think the price is reflective of the quality - but Water Gardening Direct were still the cheapest. Having said that I did leave the scarer active overnight last week when it went down to -2 deg and it wasn't damaged by the frost.
Finishing on a positive note - as far as I can tell I have had no heron visits. Whether it's because of this scarer, or I've just been lucky, who knows. I'll update the review when I actually see a heron being scared off.
